You interact with a dental hygienist each time you visit our office for routine cleanings. They’re crucial in educating patients on the importance of proper dental care.
This year’s observance is extra special at Palos Heights Family Dental, thanks to our new dental hygienist, Carina. We can’t wait for you to meet her in person if you haven’t already. In the meantime, get to know a little more about her now.
Palos Heights Family Dental Hygienist Q&A: Carina
Q. When did you decide to be a dental hygienist, and why?
A. I actually decided to become a dental hygienist later in my life. After serving six years in the Army, I was at a crossroads and not really sure what path I wanted to follow. I was taking some college classes and started working as a receptionist at a dental office. Sitting at the front desk wasn’t quite for me, so I began training as a dental assistant. I quickly fell in love with the dental world and decided I wanted to go further, and that’s when I decided to go to dental hygiene school to become a hygienist.
Q. What are your main duties?
A. Some of my main duties as a dental hygienist include providing patients with dental cleanings and educating patients on how to maintain their dental health. In addition, taking X-rays to provide accurate diagnostics for patients, and documenting patient care and treatment.
Q. What is your favorite part of the job?
A. My favorite part of the job is patient care. I love educating patients on preventive oral hygiene.
Q. What do you think it is about you that makes you a great dental hygienist?
A. Above all, being personable makes me a great hygienist. Talking and building a relationship with patients is just as important as doing their actual cleaning. I love to make sure that each patient is comfortable and trusts me with their oral hygiene care.
Q. What’s your most memorable experience on the job so far?
A. I’d have to say my most memorable experience, so far, is all the relationships I’ve built with the patients I treat.
Q. What do you like to do outside of work?
A. Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my family. My husband, Joey, my daughter Everly, and our dog, Ghost, love to go on walks. I’m also a huge sports fan, and love to play soccer and frisbee golf.
