Packing Healthy Lunches for Kids

It’s that time of the year! With kids going back to school in Palos Heights, it’s important to remember to pack them nutritious meals to help them do their best in class and keep their pearly whites shining brightly.

If you have a finicky eater, this can be a daunting task, especially if their best friend gets sugary snacks every day. However, these snacks can make kids extremely prone to cavities, so it’s best to substitute some of those extra unhealthy snacks for some scrumptious healthy snacks.

Healthy Lunches for Kids

Chips

Forget the Doritos. Or make only Friday potato chip day. There are plenty of compromises to offer your child. The rest of the week, try packing some veggie chips. If you’re ambitious, you can even try slicing vegetables at home and baking them to make your own. This can be a fun project to include your child in, and help them understand the importance of healthier eating. Just lightly salt them or provide a fun dipping sauce for your kiddo.

Fruit Snacks

Every kid wants some sort of gummy, fruit-flavored snack in their lunch. We still wish we could bring them to work, ourselves! However, these gummy, sugar-filled snacks can stick the sugar to your child’s teeth for long periods of time, increasing the risk of cavities.

Instead, try some real fruit. Strawberries, apples, and pears are actually known to be healthy for your teeth. If your child needs a little extra persuasion, give them a small amount of peanut butter, yogurt, or cream cheese to dip their fruit in. Cutting the fruit into fun shapes can also be a great way to encourage them to eat it (and it’s easier to grab and snack on).

Bread

Sandwiches – the quintessential lunch food. However, starchy, sugary bread can get stuck in teeth and cause cavities. Try a wrap instead! Whole wheat wraps are less likely to get stuck in teeth and deliver less sugar than processed breads. Plus, wraps can be fun to eat! Try some of our favorite combinations below:

  • Banana, peanut butter & bacon
  • Chicken, avocado & cheese
  • Deli turkey, cheese & shredded carrot

Just add your child’s favorite condiment and you’re good to go!

You may be thinking that you know all of this already, and those prepackaged foods you get at the store save you at least 15 minutes every morning. And those 15 minutes are valuable when it comes to getting everyone out the door. Some of these healthy snacks do come prepackaged at the grocery store, you just may have to look a little harder for them!
