Are Tooth Extractions Painful?

When it comes to modern dentistry, we’ve got a lot to be thankful for. Procedures that were once incredibly painful, are now routine and even painless. One such service is extraction. Read on to learn how we make sure tooth extraction is easy, comfortable, and worry-free for our patients at Palos Heights Family Dental.

Do I Need an Extraction?

First off, let’s talk about when and why you would need a tooth extraction. We typically do everything we can to save the natural tooth, but sometimes the only course of action is to remove the decayed or damaged tooth and replace it with a restoration. Reasons for an extraction include crowding, severe decay, or trauma. Of course, there’s also wisdom teeth removal. Although not everyone needs to have theirs removed, it’s pretty common. You may need yours removed if they become impacted, grow in crooked, or threaten to shift your smile and/or cause crowding among the existing teeth.

Will It Hurt?

It’s the first question so many of our patients ask when faced with any dental procedure. Thanks to numbing and sedation options, your dentist will work with you to ensure that the process is virtually pain-free. After the fact, your dentist will either prescribe or suggest painkillers, depending on the complexity of the extraction.

What’s Next?

If you get your wisdom teeth pulled, the area simply needs to heal and that’s it! However, if you have a tooth pulled from elsewhere in the smile, you’ll likely replace the tooth once the area has healed. Replacement options include dentures, dental implants, and bridges.
