  • What is a root canal?

A root canal is a procedure used to save a tooth when the nerves inside become inflamed. The dentist must remove the infected tissue to save the tooth and remove the pain. Once that is done, the infected area is cleaned out.

    Root Canal Symptoms

A patient with an infected root canal will almost certainly recognize something wrong. They will usually be in severe pain and will notice the following symptoms:

    • Severe and intense toothaches that won’t go away
    • Sensitivity to hot and cold foods and drinks
    • Swollen and tender lymph nodes
    • Recurring abscesses on the gums

Generally, but not always, a crown must be placed after the root canal treatment is complete to protect the tooth from further damage.

  • How is root canal treatment performed?

Root canal treatment begins with digital X-rays to assess the extent of damage in the affected tooth. The dentist then accesses the tooth’s inner structure and removes the infected material, leaving behind a hollowed-out structure. After that, the area is rinsed with an antimicrobial liquid. The tooth is then filled with a medicated substance to offer support and strength, which promotes faster healing. Finally, a dental crown is placed over the structure to protect the tooth from fractures and breakages.

  • How long does the pain from a root canal last?

Many believe root canal procedures are extremely painful, but this is untrue. Getting a root canal is usually no more painful than getting a filling. Before the procedure, your dentist will typically administer an anesthetic to minimize discomfort during and immediately after it.

However, you may experience some sensitivity and discomfort as the area around the root canal heals. During the procedure, your gums may become swollen or irritated, resulting in mild pain. This pain should subside once the tooth has fully healed. After your treatment, your dentist will provide special instructions on caring for your newly treated tooth to ensure a speedy recovery.
