Q&A with Palos Heights Family Dental Hygienist Lisa

Dental Assistant Lisa
Lisa always had an interest in taking care of others.

Q. When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?

Taking care of people was always on my radar. I guess in my young mind that looked something like being a nurse, but it was really always about being helpful.

Q. What made you want to become a Dental Assistant or work in a Dental Office?

I didn’t specifically seek it out, but I’m sure glad I ended up here! When I was 19, my aunt met a man at a restaurant. He was a dentist, and I guess they talked about him needing a dental assistant and me needing a job. I went to work for him, and stayed with him until he retired 31 years later! The work came very naturally to me.

Q. How long have you been a Dental Assistant?

It’s been four years now since Palos Heights Family Dental absorbed the practice I served for so long, so 35 years total! Working with the same dentist for all those years allowed me to form strong relationships with my patients and their families. They were a real blessing as we transitioned together to the “new” practice. Now we all feel right at home!

Lisa and family
Lisa grew up in the Palos Heights area and her family still lives nearby.

Q. What is it about you that makes you great at your job?

I have learned over the years that patients have a lot on their minds and like to know what’s happening even if they’re not asking questions. I seem to be able to read their body language and anticipate what they need to know, then I ask or answer the questions for them. I put them at ease, sometimes even hold their hand, listen to their concerns and help them understand what’s happening and why so that they aren’t surprised.

Q. What is your top tip or piece of advice for patients?

Ask questions! I think it’s so important to be informed, understand why we’re doing what we’re doing and what the result will be. Even if you think of questions after you leave, there’s no reason not to call us to ask. Also, don’t avoid coming in for a check-up in the first place. People often wait too long when something’s wrong.

Q. What are some of your favorite things about the neighborhood in and around Palos Heights?

I was born and raised in the area and my family is still nearby. We have wonderful neighbors. There’s nothing really specific, it’s just such a nice place to live.

Dental Assistant Lisa holds gardening supplies
Among other hobbies, Lisa enjoys spending time with her grandson and gardening.

Q. What are some of your favorite things to do outside of work?

My top thing right now is to spend time with my grandson. He’s five years old, and he’s a really good boy. It’s a true joy, just like it was with my two kids who are now grown. I love animals and we’ve always had pets. We’ve had dogs, cats, fish, and even a lizard, but not all at the same time! I also enjoy decorating at home, spending time in the garden, and generally being outside at home or at our cottage on the lake.

Q. Anything else you want to share?

Just that I absolutely love my job! Look forward to going to work every day and having the chance to help more people. It’s very rewarding to have a purpose, and I’m truly grateful.
